Worship Musician Job Description

Living Waters Lutheran Church is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and a Reconciling in Christ (RIC) congregation that truly welcomes everyone.

Located in Ringoes, New Jersey, our Sunday morning service is filled with joy – from our choir and music to our uplifting sermon and children's message. We're a small congregation that does big things both locally and globally by supporting and participating in service projects to help those in need, providing Christian education opportunities for all ages, hosting community events, and so much more. 

Job Summary:

The Worship Musician works closely with the Pastor and the Worship Team to ensure there is a well-planned, fully coordinated music ministry at Living Waters on a weekly basis.  As a Worship Musician at Living Waters, you will be responsible for performing piano music for worship services, aiding the worship team in making the best music decisions for the congregation, advising and supporting guest musicians, leading and accompanying the choir when they are singing, and offering insight, creativity, and experience to the overall music program. This is a part time in-person paid position responsible to the Worship Team, Council, and the Pastor. 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Weekly:

• Play prelude, liturgy, hymns, anthems and postlude music for our regularly scheduled services

• Additional rehearsals with service musicians as needed

Seasonal:

• Seasonal liturgical music review with Pastor (6 times/year)

• In addition to regular Sunday services, the following additional services are expected: Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil (if applicable) and Christmas Eve

• Midweek Advent and Lent services

• Choir directing and accompaniment

Additional Opportunities:

• Occasional special services/activities (e.g. Juneteenth, Day of Remembrance or prayer) (additional compensation)

• Funeral services when available (additional compensation)

• Weddings at the church when available (additional compensation)

Preferred Qualifications:

• 5-7 years experience as a pianist

• Knowledge of the ELCA Liturgy

• Ability to sight-read music

• Ability to guide choir and congregation with new hymns and music

• Ability to direct a choir

Compensation:

Annual compensation will be $9,400 paid on a semi-monthly basis.

Time-Off and Vacation:

Absences are paid, up to 4 service absences per year, will be planned for with a substitute supply musician arranged by the musician.  Other than unplanned illness or medical condition, the musician will notify the pastor at least one month in advance so arrangements can be made.  Absences should not include Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil (if applicable), Easter, Reformation Sunday and Christmas Eve, unless specific arrangements with the Pastor and the Office Administrator are made.

Annual Development Review:

After 3 months, the Worship Team will review the partnership and give and receive feedback from the musician. After the initial review, annual evaluations will follow with the Review Team/Worship Team.
